Unorthodox Apple Crisp


There are a lot of apple crisp recipes out there but this one is definitely a keeper. I even call it an unorthodox apple crisp!

"Why?" you might ask. It is because this recipe has a little bit of a tasty twist to it. You're not only getting one layer of the crispy and crunchy mixture on the top but two mouth-watering layers of the crumbly mixture as base and also the top layer...one word...Awesome!!!

Okay let's cut to the chase! I found this delightful recipe on my favourite cooking website, allrecipes.com. I tweaked the recipe a bit to suit my taste and to get a suitable portion for my 9x13 inch pyrex dish. Let's get started!

The ingredients needed for the apple crisp:
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3 cups of rolled oats
1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoons ground nutmeg
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup chopped walnuts/ pecans
2 cups (500g) butter, softened
2 quarts (10 medium-sized) apples, peeled, cored and sliced

Steps needed to make the apple crisp...
  • Combine flour, oats, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar in a large bowl.
  • Add a cup of chopped walnuts/pecans into the mixture and combine well.

  • Cut butter into the mixture using a pastry cutter or a fork until you get a crumbly texture
I used this pastry cutter from Betty Crocker
  • Take half of the mixture and press it into the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking/pyrex dish.
  • Cover the crumb mixture with apple slices.
  • Then sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top of the apple slices.
  • Bake in a preheated oven (175 degrees C) for 45 to 50 minutes or until the apples are soft and tender.
Tadaaaaa!!! Your very own apple crisp!

Tips on making this delicious dessert
  1. I would suggest you guys to use green apples a.k.a granny smith apples. It won't get too soft when it cooks.
  2. Slice the apples not too thin.About 1/4 inch thick. This is so that the apple slices remain crunchy and not mushy.
  3. Let the butter get softened by putting it out in room temperature for at least 15 minutes. Do not melt the butter! It will not give you the crumbly texture.
  4. If you don't have a pastry cutter, you can also apply the rubbing method using both of your hands to mix everything until you get a sandy crumbly texture.
  5. After putting the base of the crisp, press the apple slices gently into the crisp. It gives the crisp mixture a little flavour.
  6. If you find that the apple is kind of tart (sour), you can mix 1/4 cup of sugar with the apple slices. 
  7. Don't forget to serve the apple crisp with vanilla ice-cream. The sweet tart flavour from the apple crisp goes well with the sweet aroma from the vanilla ice-cream. Oh Delicious!
