Have you heard of Paternoster?

What is a paternoster?
A paternoster or paternoster lift is a passenger elevator which consists of a chain of open compartments normally designed for two persons that move slowly in a loop up and down inside a building without stopping. Passengers can step on or off at each floor as they like.

Due to safety issues, most of the paternoster lifts have been closed, however some still survive around the world especially in European countries and one can be found at my university, Hochschule Niederrhein. Bangga seyh... Oh and the paternoster at my uni has its safety features. So xdela risau kalau naik  :)

A lil bit of facts on Paternoster
  • First built in 1884 by the Dartford, England engineering firm of J & E Hall Ltd
  • It was originally called Cyclic Elevator
  • Can be found mostly in continental Europe, especially in public buildings, than in the United Kingdom.
  • Moving at a slow speed of about 0.3 metres per second
  • Five people were killed by paternosters from 1970 to 1993
  • In April 2006, Hitachi announced plans for a modern paternoster-style elevator with computer-controlled cars to ensure better safety.
This is how a paternoster works...Interesting huh? (Source from Wikipedia)

I think it's one of the coolest elevators ever! The paternoster in Hochschule Niederrhein is one of the reasons  why I wanted to study there..haha....teruja dapat naik paternoster tiap2 hari kan.. ;p

I made two videos of the paternoster at my university that I would like to share with all of you Enjoy!

The first video shows the paternoster from front, the movement of it going up and down continuously without stopping.

This is a video of me going on the paternoster as it went down to the basement which is not dangerous but kinda dirty and then it went up to the 5th floor, the highest floor of the university. :)

Till the next post..
Tschüss und mach's gut!
